Beldon Trails Nov 2005 : I awoke today and found
The frost perched on the town
It hovered in a frozen sky
And it gobbled Summer down
When the sun turned traitor cold
All the trees were shivering in a naked row
I get the urge for going but I never seem to go

Chicago Mar 2005 : Traveled from Hartford to Chicago for a 1 day business conference on the last day of March. Beautiful sunny morning when I arrived, but by 4:00 p.m. there were tornado warnings just west of the city. Flight delays were the norm, and it turned into a 20 hour day. The rainbow was worth the wait.

Montana August 2005 : Wonderful late Summer trip to Montana. We flew into Great Falls and traveled up the Front Range past Freezeout Lake, the Blackfoot Indian Reservation and Babb to get to Many Glacier. James and I hiked up to Iceberg Lake while Mimi, Jess and Juls explored the Swift Current Lake Trail. There was a mother grizzly and 2 cubs wandering through the area, so everyone was on full alert. We were fortunate enough to watch the grizzlies for a couple of hours late in the day through the safety of a spotting scope. Awesome sight. Glacier National Park was teaming with wildlife including deer, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats. The Going-to-the-Sun Road and the Hidden Lake Trail provided close-up views of the sheep and goats.

Later in the week we made our way to Missoula to drop off James at the University. Along the way we made stops in Kalispell, Ninepipes NWA, the National Bison Range, and Lolo Pass via the Lewis & Clark Trail. The highlight vista of the trip was the Walton Lakes Overlook at the end of Tom Beal Forest Service Road in the Bitteroots - stunning scenery!

Montana Sep 2004 : Eventful trip to say the least. This was my first opportunity to hug and hold our new grandson, Nathaniel. It was also Natie Joe's first adventure into Glacier National Park, and at 4 months old he did the 6 mile hike to Siyeh Pass - albeit in a backpack!

We stayed 2 nights in Many Glacier and then took a couple of days wondering around the Front Range from Browning to Choteau to Augusta and south again before heading back to Missoula.

I had great fun with John & Keyla, and saw a ton of wildlife. The hikes in Glacier with Natie Joe were spectacular. We even got a chance to drive up the Sun Canyon Road near Augusta and visit with Pepperoni, the beer drinking parrot.

Can't wait to go back!

Mount Rainier NP Jul 2003 : When visiting the Northwest it's hard to miss Mt Rainier. It looms ever present as you fly into Seattle, and weather cooperating, it never leaves your sight despite being some 50 miles south of the city. The mountain itself is massive!

At 14, 410' Mt Rainier is the 2nd largest mountain in the continental U.S. next to Mt Whitney in CA. Mt Rainier is an active volcano encased in over 35 square miles of snow and ice. The park contains outstanding examples of old growth forests and subalpine meadows.

I only had a few hours to zip around the mountain, but on another day I'll take a hike or sit streamside among the wildflowers. Ah, to be able to dream!

Muir Woods & Pt Reyes May 2005 : All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best. - John Muir

Drove home via the Holland Tunnel and Westside Highway. Decided to stop at the Riverside Church in Harlem to say a prayer for the Pope. Gorgeous church. They were holding a music festival for high school students, and I got to hear Bay Path HS from Green Bay, WI perform. Very good musicians and a nice group of kids.

Washington D.C. October, 2005 : Motto: Justitia omnibus (Justice to all)
I went to D.C. for a conference that filled up my days, but it was nice to walk the monuments at night. The city icons draw out your patriotism. There is irony everywhere you look though from homeless people in the land of plenty to the heavily guarded Capital Building in the land of the free. Still the draw is universal to the philosophies of life set down by the likes of Franklin, Madison, Hamilton, and Jefferson. Flawed in their day on practicing equality for all, they couldn't have know how important their words would become in establishing the rights and dignity for every individual. I spoke with a beautiful young family from Mexico at the Washington Monument and a cabbie from Pakistan with 2 kids in college. They were happy people. The were grateful for the opportunity to work hard and provide for their own loved ones in a free and open society. It reminded me of how fortunate I am.

Yellowstone NP Dec 2004 : A quick visit to Yellowstone through the North Entrance in Gardiner, MT just before the New Year. Lamar Valley and Tower Junction were both active with elk & bison. A roadside kill brought the coyotes and ravens. James came with me, and on his first visit he was blessed to see a lone black wolf just north of Tower Junction. The heavy snows had not fallen, but the grey skies foretold of the harsh winter yet to come.

Yellowstone NP Sep 2005 : John and I flew west to meet up with James at the University of Montana before heading off to Yellowstone National Park for the weekend. We made the 270 mile trip to the Gardiner entrance in about 4 hours and set up our tents amid the hillside sagebrush in Mammoth Campground. We had 2 beautiful nights of shooting stars, the Milky Way and the sounds of bugling elk bouncing off the canyon walls. We used every hour of the day to walk the geysers, hike to mountain lakes, ride the scenic roads and scour the landscape for wildlife. Lamar Valley was active once again with a wolf pack (11 in all) that you could view through a spotting scope from the roadside. Bison were everywhere! Elk were also plentiful as were the mule deer. We ran into a lone coyote in various parts of the park on each day, and a couple of moose near the Northeast entrance to the park. We never did see any bear, but we did find a fresh paw print along the lakeside trail we hiked off the Beartooth Highway. The hike around Thousand Island Lake was phenomenal. We were alone on the lake on a crisp but sunny day. At the north end of the lake we all went for a dip in the frigid waters as part of our latest hiking ritual. James says the waters of Iceberg Lake in Glacier were slightly colder, but not by much! We took a power trip down the Chief Joseph Highway into Cody, WY before going back into the park through the East entrance that ultimately descends on Yellowstone Lake. The Grand Tetons were visible far to the south just beyond the reach of the lake. We were absolutely blessed to sit beneath a hovering Golden Eagle along the shore before heading off through Hayden Valley. On our last day in Yellowstone snow fell throughout the day foretelling of the hardships of winter that most never see. The contrast of white on the colors of autumn was visually stunning. Our weekend came to end too quickly, but we'll return on another day. In the meantime our memories will hold us.
