NCAA Hockey 2006 : 2006 pilgrimage included stops in Worcester and Albany. We love it when they play the East and Northeast Regionals close enough for us to catch parts of both tournaments. Surprisingly, the games were not close. BU walloped Nebraska-Omaha 9-2, BC shut out Miami of Ohio 5-0 and then BC blanked BU 5-0. The BU-BC game was the match up everyone wanted, but BC dominated.

In Albany, Michigan State beat UNH 1-0 although the game didn't seem that close. We only caught the first period of the Maine - Harvard tilt as we had to get back to Worcester for the BU-BC match on Saturday night. Maine lead 2-1 when we left and wound up pounding Harvard 6-1. Maine then went on to beat Michigan State 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. Michigan State did well to close the gap late in the game, but Maine was outstanding.

Bob G. offered up the Suburban and kept it just under 80 mph in getting us to the games on time. John joined us after being away from the action for the last 2 years. He's hardcore so we were happy to have him back.

Justin, Buck, James, Julie and I went early on Friday to Worcester and roamed around the Hockey Expo. Julie gave blood in exchange for a puck from Bob Sweeney (ex-Bruin), I introduced the boys to Hall of Fame defenseman Brad Park, and told Lyndon Byers John would be by later in the afternoon to duke it out with him. The Expo was a great showcase for all the hockey nuts in this world - we are card carrying members!

CIAC LL Football Finals 2004 : Great high school championship game played by the top 2 teams in CT. New Britain looked like they were going to blow out Greenwich early with a 20-6 1st quarter lead, but the Cardinals hung tough and fought back. They had a 34-33 lead with about 5 minutes left, but couldn't stop the offensive jugernaut of the Hurricanes. Big crowd, loud fans, and a classic game.

Photos are a bit "noisy" because security wouldn't let me down on the field. I need a press pass!

NCAA East Regional 2004 : Our annual pilgrimage to the NCAA hockey tournament took us this year to the East Regionals in Albany, NY.

Wisconsin, Ohio State, Harvard and Maine played 2 days of intense hockey with Maine advancing to the Frozen Four. Harvard had Maine dead to rights on Friday, but blew a 3 goal lead in the 3rd period. Wisconsin beat Ohio State on the first day, but lost to Maine in a heart breaker 2-1 in OT on Saturday.

NCAA Hockey 2005 : Who needs the NHL? College hockey at its finest provides all the excitement and drama possible in the world of sports.

This year's pilgrimage:
Hockey East Quarterfinals Game 1 at Boston College - an underdog UMass team took the number one team in Hockey East to overtime before bowing out.

ECAC Championship Weekend at Pepsi Arena in Albany, NY - Cornell swept UVM and Harvard to capture the ECAC crown in dominating fashion. They have a legitimate shot at a national crown. Colgate, coming off a double OT loss to Harvard on Friday, had just enough gas to hold off UVM in the consolation game, and gain the final berth in the NCAA Sweet 16.

NCAA East Regional at the DCU Center, Worcester, MA. BC was the number 1 seed, but picked a bad time of the year to collapse. They barely squeeked by Mercyhurst on Friday 5-4, and got pounded by UND on Saturday 6-3. UND had easily defeated BU on Friday, 4-0.

NCAA Northeast Regional at the Mullins Center, Amherst, MA. The finals were on Easter Sunday, so we only made it to the semi-finals but they were 2 great overtime games. A very talented Denver team outplayed Bemidji State but needed an extra period to eak out a 4-3 win. UNH edged Harvard before a large contingent of Hockey East fans, 3-2. The Wildcat-Crimson game was by far the most exciting game of the weekend.

UVM Basketball 2005 : Jan 30, 2005 - Brother Joe and I took in the UVM - UHart basketball game in West Hartford, and watched our alma mater dismantle the Hawks, 75-55. UVM is gunning for their 3rd straight 20 win season and another appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Very strange to see a good Catamount basketball team having grown up following the recreational teams of the 60's. I can still recall watching Aldo Salati and Frank Martinuk play at the Patrick Gym when a good season meant beating the Purple Knights from Winooski.

These Cats are a different breed. Taylor Coppenrath is a tremendous player, and a better story. Even most Vermonters have no clue where W. Barnet is! Very strong, great free throw shooter, and never brings the ball down. Reminds me of a smaller Kevin McHale.

T.J. Sorrentine is a top notch guard with great ball handling skills, good court awareness, and a nice outside shot. Very quick and knows where Coppenrath is at all times.

A bonus for me was seeing Kyle Cieplicki play and put up a nice hoop at the end of the game. His Dad and I played on a few teams together as schoolmates. Looks like the old man taught him the best of his tricks.
